Snap is shutting down its desktop camera application, which let users make video calls with cat ears and a pirate cap. On a support page, the business announced that the product would be canceled on January 25 but did not give a reason. After the cutoff, users will not be able to download or use Snap Camera.

Snap Camera History

The company initially released Snap Camera in 2018 for creators to use with video conferencing apps like Skype, YouTube, Google Hangouts, Skype and Zoom. Users of the Windows and Mac versions of the program can choose a different face filter during video. Call or live stream.

Snap’s camera shuts down

After Snap’s camera shuts down later this month, it’s recommended to remove the app and use your default camera so users don’t get a blank screen.

The web version of the app, which launched last July, will work with compatible AR lenses, the business said.

Snap said it is focusing more on expanding the reach of CameraKit for the web in response to a creator on Twitter.

“We’re shifting our web-based investments to the community of augmented reality creators and developers to focus on broadening access to CameraKit for the web. For additional information this year, visit here , and note that Snapchat for web still lets you use Lens on your computer.

It’s not entirely shocking that the Snap camera app has been discontinued, as The Verge previously reported. It shuttered its drone product last year, months after it was initially introduced, and laid off 20 percent of its workforce.

The business also revealed in December that it intends to spin off Zenly, the location-based networking app it acquired in 2017. Side initiatives like a desktop camera software will naturally be reduced as the company will now focus on e-commerce partnerships and pay lenses to generate more revenue with a down-sized staff.
